Michael Durek is a multi-instrumentalist, sound designer and producer. He creates and performs electronic music as TheUse, plays with Pas Musique, Rachel Mason, and many more on piano, guitar, theremin, and electronics.  Performances/ Remixes/Collaborations  with Cibo Matto (remix), Sam Hillmer (Zs), Black Saturn, Jay Pluck, Tyler Evans, John 3:16, Pat Noecker, JG Thirlwell, Loop B Lourenço, Rafał Iwański, Richard Lainhart, Vj Jim Tuite, Vj Mamiko Kushida, No Sky God, Philippe Petit, many others. Since 2010, Durek has performed in ten countries and at many festivals including Upvan Arts in Thane, India with Gandhar Bhalerao, CocArt festival at the Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun Poland (Pas Musique), Fausts’s Avant Garde festival in Germany (Pas Musique), and Kunstzwerg festival in Zweibrucken , Germany (SK Orchestra and Pas Musique),  Eqilibrium Festival 2015 (TheUse).

He actively performs in the NYC and NJ area, and has played in many venues including Joe’s Pub (Rachel Mason), Le Poisson Rouge (John 3:16 feat. TheUse), Pioneer Works (Transmissions), Cameo Gallery (George Sand), Spectrum, Out to See Festival, Trans Pecos, Harvestworks, Flux Factory, Central Booking, The Tank, Monkey Town, Public Assembly, Madame Claude, and Surreal Estate, Muchmore’s, Bizarre, and more.

Durek’s theremin playing has led him to play the US premiere the work “Icarus” with the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra in Spring 2013, by Lera Auerbach.  He also performed at the 2012 Queens Museum Biennial in Rachel Mason’s “Dear Unisphere” work, an In January 2014, to perform at the Upvan Arts Festival in Thane, a suburb of Mumbai India.  He was also a featured presenter at Morristown’s First Night Celebration 2015.

Durek’s sound design work has been commissioned by artist Laura Mylott Manning, Anne Percoco, Rachel Mason’s lauded full length feature film “The Lives of Hamilton Fish”, PATROL (Rich D Films), John Dunstan’s film Beach Lake (GDFF and Shown at Mana Contemporary), Other Peeps Episode 5,  as a composer for Memetic Arts U-GRUVE app, and more.

Durek has appeared on over 40 albums, and has a full length solo disc on the Alrealon Musique label called What’s The Use? which came out 2014, subsequent remix album, and Time Pieces on Weatnu / Milligrid records 2015.  He has enjoyed airplay on BiP_HOp generation, WFMU, WRSU, Disc Delirium, and many other stations. His studio work includes an official Cibo Matto Remix.
